U-Shape?

Has anyone ever tried setting their class up in a U-shape, kind of like a half-circle? I'm curious as to how effective this is. It's suppossed to reinforce the idea of everyone working together, and help classroom management, because you can see everone fairly easily. But that's just what the books say...
