Cursive in middle school
By Dawn

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm smiling as I read this thread. As a 6th grade teacher, I never realized how much time and effort the elem. teachers put into cursive. I remember it being a major deal when I was in school, but that was 30 years ago.

The
first thing students (and parents) ask when they arrive in middle school is "Do we have to write in cursive?" And I don't know a single teacher at my school who cares either way. I've always had the philosophy that whatever way is most comfortable and speedy for the student is the way I want him or her writing. And with the proliferation of computers, it is really not necessary
to have a beautiful "hand" for final drafts.

Like I said, reading these posts has opened my eyes. Maybe I should be making them practice taking notes and writing drafts in cursive. What do you middle school teachers think?
