Cursive in middle school By Dawn

I'm smiling as I read this thread. As a 6th grade teacher, I never realized how much time and effort the elem. teachers put into cursive. I remember it being a major deal when I was in school, but that was 30 years ago.The | first thing students (and parents) ask when they arrive in middle school is "Do we have to write in cursive?" And I don't know a single teacher at my school who cares either way. I've always had the philosophy that whatever way is most comfortable and speedy for the student is the way I want him or her writing. And with the proliferation of computers, it is really not necessary | | to have a beautiful "hand" for final drafts. Like I said, reading these posts has opened my eyes. Maybe I should be making them practice taking notes and writing drafts in cursive. What do you middle school teachers think?
