split grades By Cathy-Dee

I think some of this comes from the perception that split grades cannot work or that some students get missed in the process. This however depends more on how the teacher handles the split grade and the students themselves. This | parent is going to have her viewpoint perhaps no matter what you say or do. You might want to invite her in for another meeting and show her your year plans and some of your unit and daily plans so that she can actually see that you indeed plan separately for some of the materials. And perhaps she could come in and help once a week or twice a week for a month and see how things | | are run. Also explain to her the philosophy on how many split grades are put together. I've heard that often it's the case of the higher students from the lower grade and the medium/higher students from the upper grade that are put together And the lower students would either be in a straight grade or be placed with lower or medium students of the other grade. This way you do not have too many of the students in the lower grade surpassing students in the higher grade. You also have those students in the higher grade as role models for the younger students. From what you wrote I got the idea that's how your school handled split grades for the most part. Perhaps if you explained that to the parent as well she'd begin to think that her child was placed there as a role model and a student who could do fine as long as he applied himself.
