I'm thinking

that you handled things exactly the way I would have recommended. Grade 5 students are now at the age where they will try to pull things on substitute teachers. This isn't saying all classes will be like this or that it
doesn't happen in other grades, but grade 5 seems to be a typical starting grade for this type of behaviour.

I agree that notes should be left, if the students are asking to leave I would say to them simply No as I do not have information on this, however I will leave a note for your teacher letting her know you requested to leave. Make sure everyone else hears this - you can be sure

that future requests will be more reliable if they know their teacher is going to know about them. And I agree that the resource teachers will come and get them if they are supposed to go out for something.

As far as their first comment, Ms X doesn't do it this way - I would just state first thing - I'm not Ms. X so we may do things differently and I expect you to follow what I ask. I will be leaving a note at the end of the day for your teacher and hope I will be reporting great things about your class. This lets them know you are in charge, that you will not argue with them and that their teacher will know about the day.
