I agree with some of what the previous post says, such as saving your energy for the important battles, closing done your website if it isn't required, and trying to find a level of success (at any grade level) and working
from there. Success often does breed success!

However, I cannot see "lowering the standard" and "rasiing grades." I don't think this teaches students reality.

I think it's a good idea to go down to whatever level you need to for your students to show success. Obviously if they can't identify nouns at sixth grade level they have some major gaps. And it's true you may not be

able to take this group as far--but I also think you need to document on their report cards that they are working below grade level. (You don't have to say how far below!)

Another idea I have is to do individula spot-checks with them when introducing concepts. (In private, if possible.) At this age, I would think that all but the most self-confident would be reluctant to admit they weren't "getting it!"
