Anyone else offended?

I'm not sure if you've ever subbed but it is darn hard. First off, most times the staff will not let a sub forget that they are the outsider, so I'm sure you don't need to remind all of us. The children are very disrespectful
and they don't follow rules or directions because there is "just a sub" in the room. Sometimes the sub NEEDS to change things to keep the kids interested and under control. While I've had detailed lesson plans to follow, sometimes a class just WILL NOT do the things no matter how good you are in classroom management and I've had to change things just to get through the day. I've
been in a fifth grade inner city class and the only thing I could get them to do quietly and stay on task and keep from cussing me out was to let them work a little bit longer on a social studies assignment. Yes, it meant we could not begin reading the chapter, but you know what??? If I would have stopped them while they were working quietly and tried to read a social studies chapter that most of the ELL kids couldn't have understood anyway, the room would go into chaos. Many times subbing is simply just trying to get through the day. I think that "real" teachers should appreciate the fact that the sub is there at all, rather than worry about what went wrong.
