my bunch chats constantly
By Christina

Clip to ScrapBook
I am a first year teacher, and my children also chat constantly. (Aargh!) I hate to be a meanie, also - it just isn't me - but I have found a little meanie goes a long way. This is because students know when you mean it
(no pun intended). Also, I have tried to build in a great deal of rountine - challenging for a 1st year teacher. Practice reading dramatically, and they will improve storytime listening. I have found that my large carpet gives them too much wiggle room because those in the back don't listen. Also, if I say something they connect with, I may let them talk for ten seconds, then chant,
"Come back to me, come back to me, hear what I have to say. Come back to me, come back to me and you can learn that way." Chants and music really seem to get their attention. Good luck. I am improving, but gosh it's tough being patient.
