subs....why we love em and why we don't

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi
I leave detailed notes for all my subs because I teach special ed and my room runs a little differently....and when I come back I always ask my kiddo's if I should have a sub return again or not....and they are surprisingly
honest with me....I had a terrible sub just this past Tuesday. I had gotten ill at school and needed to leave....the sub came at noon. She had 15 minutes to do spelling with one child (which should be enough time to complete an entire lesson)... I left detailed directions (and the spelling is scripted) and all she managed to do was 2 sentences. I asked that particular child if
we should have the sub back again and he said NO....I asked why not and he said I scammed her a good one! Now he just scammed her out of candy but my point is the kids do tell what happens at school and I do go by what they say....the sub if fully certified.....I know because she left her business card (honestly the only way anyone could tell) but there is no way she'll be back in my classroom again...in my district we have to fill out a sub report form after each sub has been in our room....she also did not leave any notes of what she did in my room.....

I always welcome subs in our school and introduce myself - especially if I have children mainstreamed in that classroom.....and as another poster has stated how in the world would we ever know what their certification is?????

I do appreciate it when a sub leaves a detailed note letting me know what she was able to cover and what she didn't. I appreciate my work area being left neat and tidy as well as the actual room itself. I want her to teach and be with the kids and not to correct any papers....leave those to me....but mostly I want her to be kind and PLEASE follow my lesson plans....don't wing it...my kids don't go with the flow...they like their routine and if a sub decides to do her own thing the day is ruined for all...

I know this has gone off on a tangent but hey it is the vent board!
