Prewriting...

I agree with Abby, that writing is a very important part of a continuum of LSRW skills. Also, I think you should definitely bring this discussion to your team.

As a teacher of intermediate students, I do think that prewriting
at the kindergarten level IS writing, because it's an important first step in the writing process. Writing is broad term that encompasses all the parts of the process (prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading, publishing). These are all the components of making writing "meaningful," but nonetheless, each component IS writing!

So, with this in mind, I'd add that writing

in itself is a continuum.

When teachers discuss with parents regarding their child's writing progress, they should be shown where on the continuum s/he is, and what can be done to help her/him move forward (if need be).

This should also be something the students are involved in...letting them know where in the writing process they are.

Maybe your team needs to have a consensus regarding the meaning of "prewriting."

Afterthought: There is also a reading process (pre-reading, included!)
