Another text that is in the room but rarely used is the Social Studies text. Ours is outdated and doesn't seem to be a good match to our Social Studies objectives. But it does have good content reading in it that goes along with our studies of regions and native americans. This could be a good resource if that is available. My advice to you is to not to spend your plan time copying and locating articles and stories. If you have these resources, why reinvent the wheel? Especially since a basal reader usually has a teachers guide that may all ready have adaptable lessons to cut down on the work you need to do for preperation.
