Ideas for GR short stories/articles

You may want to try utilizing a basal for this rather than trying to locate and copy short articles or stories. Do you have an old reading text that is sitting on the shelves somewhere?

In my old district, we
had basal readers (barely used, but brand new). I went through them to look and see if there were stories in it that tied together with other curricular areas. For example, there were some great stories that went with our region studies (social studies) and also some stories that matched well with our science unit on Earth Works.

Another source might be a Scholastic News, Weekly Reader,

or Time for Kids. If you don't use it as a class, it wouldn't be too expensive to purchase a small number of subscriptions (5-10), to keep reusing for small groups. You get them for every week, and it would be a great resource for teaching reading nonfiction.

Another text that is in the room but rarely used is the Social Studies text. Ours is outdated and doesn't seem to be a good match to our Social Studies objectives. But it does have good content reading in it that goes along with our studies of regions and native americans. This could be a good resource if that is available.

My advice to you is to not to spend your plan time copying and locating articles and stories. If you have these resources, why reinvent the wheel? Especially since a basal reader usually has a teachers guide that may all ready have adaptable lessons to cut down on the work you need to do for preperation.

Let me know how your work in GR groups go.
