I make sure I teach all the skills that go along with each story in the basal(main idea, drawing conclusions, cause/effect, story elements, etc.) I use a lot of graphic organizers (venn diagram, charts, etc.) We predict
before we read each story. They might even make predicitons in their reading log. We first read the story together. I read the story to them. Another day they read the story aloud in whole group. Then I pull them aside in small groups. I used the scores from the Star Test that determines AR levels and grouped accordingly. Those not meeting in small group with me have a work folder
that has activities, worksheets, etc. while others do centers.

When I do novels, I just make sure I am pulling various skills that are from our frameworks. They still do reading logs that I use in various ways. I pull vocabulary words from chapters. They do a project at the end of the novel.

What reading series are you using? I use the McGraw Hill. If you don't have a book that gives you the particular skills then you need to obtain your state objectives and make sure you are covering skills they need to know.

Good Luck!
