native ca

Hi,
I finished my native california about a week and a half ago (I teach in a year round school). What we did *at the advice of my partner teacher...I am new to 4th grade* was have the kids do a research report (based
on their writing portfolio requirement of report of info) on one fot he 4 tribes from our text (Miwok, Chumash, Cahuilla, and Hupa). They spent their social studies time researching for their project with an organizer we had from our district writing folder. We had books to use and I got info from the internet.

From there, they had to write their reports (which I haven't graded yet--seems

so daunting with 34 kids).....at the end, the kids went into groups with their tribe and came up with a simple presentation for the class about their tribe. It was cool.

We are also about 2/3 of the way through reading Island of the Blue Dolphins which nicely ties Native CA to Exploration...we will be starting Spanish CA/Missions soon with a simulation from interact.

Feel free to email me personally--but I am still pretty lost with 4th grade stuff....

Eileen
