Pumpkin Babies
By moe

Clip to ScrapBook
This is the 4th year I'll be doing "Pumpkin Babies" with my 2nd graders. Each student gets a mini-pumpkin (we get them from the local fruit stand) that will be his/her "baby" for a week (a select number of students may even
get twins). They are to care for the babies all week, then take them home the weekend prior to Halloween. The babies come back Monday "dressed" as that student's favorite storybook character. We then have a "guess the character" contest. (Parent directions are sent home to help explain project).
Throughout the first week the students are responsible for making sure their babies
are safe at all times. If we leave the room, babies must go into the "nursery" which is a decorated box at the back of the room. Babies left unattending are confiscated by the teacher. A "ransom" note is left behind describing a task the student must do to regain custody of the baby (clean your desk, write a letter to a friend, read a book, etc.) Be creative! My 2nd graders LOVE this one!
