As a parent who has come to teaching via the long route, I also wonder why children are so different than when I was in school? I believe it's a response to the differences in the world. The world we live in today, besides the obvious difference of the terrorist acts of 9/11 is a world of immediate information and of course, instant gratification. Even driving on our roads is indicative of this, nobody wants to wait; lives are so involved and complicated that everyone is hurrying to the next destination. Children are merely trying to make it in the world we've set up for them...sadly, I don't think there is any way to turn back to the calmer way of living. We, as teachers need to try to make a difference in our classrooms, one student at a time. Sorry for going on.....
