    Departmentalized in 2nd grade

We are departmentalized in our 2nd grade classes, but ours isn't as broken down as your situation is. I love it. I teach Math with alternating Science and Social Studies by the 6-week period. The other teacher teaches the Language Arts block. We each have our homeroom group until noon and then we swap students. The students have a box for their supplies and a homework folder that travels with them. There isn't anything else to be moved except on days that she has them to take their reading book home. None of this has been a problem with us. This is the first year we have done this. It has helped a lot that we think a lot alike and have the same expectations of the children. Even though with this the other teacher isn't as happy with it as I am. We were not forced into this situation. We were asked if we would like to try it. (It sounds like your school/system may have some administrative ego problems. Are teachers plentiful in your area? They are not in ours. Maybe that is the difference. Do you think they'll ever figure out that all these great ideas they dream up always goes around full circle back to the old way of teaching. I see it gradually happening. Hey, we turned out ok from the old school, didn't we? Well, let me get off my soapbox, that's another story for another time.) Well, anyway because the other teacher has decided she doesn't like it, we won't be doing it next year.
I guess what I'm saying is that departmentalizing isn't for everyone. We all have our own teaching styles. For instance, I can't figure out how to do guided reading and centers with a class of 20 students. I think if it doesn't work for all, then it shouldn't be done (that is if it is something that will affect other teachers).
    Good Luck with your situation!
