Can you make adjustments within the structure?

I sympathize with your dilemma and agree that it is not appropriate for your second graders, but I wonder if the teachers can make it more kid friendly.

Do the students need to take their binders from class to class? Maybe each teacher could have a crate for hanging folders for each group of students' work and group resources for students to use, such as pencils, crayons, scissors, etc. Then students would not be responsible for carrying so many things from place to place. This would also probably shorten the transition time and give more time for teaching.

Are the teachers talking about homework? Could the teachers plan a homework schedule together so that homework is coordinated? Maybe reading homework everyday, but spelling and math on alternate days.

Just curious, what are the five different class that 2nd graders are having- Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies and Science?

It sounds as if the teachers and the students have really been put in a difficult situation, but with some extraordinary cooperation from teachers, it could be managable. On the other hand, if you make it work too well, the principal may decide to stick with it for another year!

Good luck in a tough situation.
