For several years now, I have started my year with geometry. I have found this to be a great way to start for many reasons. First, it is a pretty level playing field for my students. Some of the brightest math students don't do so well with spatial math. Secondly, it is very visual and hands-on. Therefore, the kids can really have fun with it. Also, I love that my students learn right away to use a straight edge, compass and protractor because they use them for so many other things throughout the year (graphs, diagrams, etc.). Lastly, for the most part, the students feel successful with this. Place value (where most math texts begin) is so frustrating for some students. Do they need to use basic numeration, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to figure area and perimeter and missing angles? Sure they do! But I find this an excellent time to introduce the calculator too! After the geometry unit, I do pretty much follow the order of the text.
