hi, first of all i tell my students that there is never any wasted time in our classroom.... so, we have ar at our school, and they know that they are to read a book when they are finished. also, another fun idea is to have the students make a journal. then have them write daily in their journal. you could give a topic or they could have free write. also, have you thought of students making folder games for eng, read,or spell. make up a poem or song about how to remember the linking and or helping verbs. i also purchased an easy crossword puzzle book (not a child's) and put it in the middle of each group. you would be surprised how much they enjoy this. i bought some cursive writing boards from walmart and each group has one. they can practice on this. they could make a search a word out of some of their voc. they could practice on their mult. facts. they could listen to a book on tape if you have the right equipment. they could write a minibook and decorate it. they could begin to write a big book , plan this out, work on illustrations, etc. they could illustrate voc words by drawing and coloring pictures. anyway, i hope this might help you. i think it would help to have several different things that you could always fall back on. what ever you choose, you might want to make a poster telling them what they could do when they are finished with their work.. at discovery dot com you can have puzzles , etc made. they like these. good luck to you!!!!! bebe
