This year I have 25 first graders-also extremely young (5 who don't turn 6 until late fall!) They range from 2 good readers about 10 emergent readers and the rest still don't recognize the letters in their own name. We don't have assistants either. Last year I worked way too hard and I think burnt myself out. This year I knew I needed a new attitude. I just feel that I can only do so much and I will do the best I can with a set time limit. Once a week I bring work home only. I allow 2 days a week to work until 4:15/4:30 (we get out at 3:45pm.) Yes, that does mean one day a week I'm busting my butt running around to get some things done. But...I can only do so much. This is my ninth year in first grade and it doesn't get easier, every year there's more assigned to the grade level. So it's my attitude that had to change - and believe me sometimes it's hard to walk away from a pile of papers or papers to be copied, but I need my own time and my family time. Happier more relaxed you will make a happier classroom envirnoment. And don't forget to laugh!
