First off, pat yourself on the back since you are taking your own time to help a new teacher. I am a second year teacher but at a new school this year and have 2 mentor teachers who do not get paid anything to stay after and help me and let me complain to them. But if I had a million dollars I would give it to them for their help. Since your principal asked you to do this, he must think that you are a great teacher already, He would not put a bad teacher as a mentor. So when you get depressed that he is not giving you any compliments, he gave you a great one just by picking you!!
