I had a 2nd grade thief last year. Search desks and backpacks immediately upon finding out something is missing. When you find the offender, punish him/her. If it is always the same child, as it was in my case, I made that child empty pockets and backpack before entering my room every moring and before leaving every afternoon. If he had something that he did not start the day with he got after school detention. It's harsh, but he stopped taking things. Get the support of your principal before searching an individual daily. I had a known thief, so my principal supported me. Good luck! It is a difficult situation.
