I teach poetry to increace their vocabulary and FLUENCY, FLUENCY, FLUENCY. I love it because they get to see words over and over again and hopefully won't forget some of those words they've read. I usually introduce a poem by reading it and talking about the lang. I also ask questions about what they think the author wanted to say etc. We read it together several times, each table reads it, boys then the girls read it over and over. Poems are meant to be read out loud. Once they have a collection then I teach them to write poetry. Some are spin-offs of what we've already read. I also teach them that poems do not have to rhyme. Word choice is important with poetry. Have them choose well.
You must model, model, model first. Hope this helps. I think kids are natural poets. Oh, I always have them illustrate their poem and we add it to our poetry binder.
