I bought a coloring book about American history that featured famous americans. Then I designed patterns for hats/hair for paper plates of each. The students read and wrote about their character, then constructed the paper plate head and [we] posted all in the hallway for the others to read and enjoy. Makes a good english research project, good SS, includes arts/crafts, and then you could have each student enter his "person" on a time line, show and tell items that his "person" introduced to American culture, etc. But mine all started with a coloring book!
