    DEAD Time

OK. If I understand correctly you need something to do from 10:00 - 10:10 AM Right?

I got an idea from a 1, 2, 3 teacher from Nova Scotia. I don't know where she got it. It's called DEAD Time. (I thought you were writting about her version...) It's Drop Everything And Draw Time. She had 2 or 3 sheets of plain white paper in a manilla envelope for each child each week and they could go and get their own personal envelopes at DEAD time and draw quietly while listening to various types of music. This teacher played a lot of classical music. The children did not have to colour these.

I use this but not quit the same way. My students have NYFD (Not Yet Finished Drawers) and if their drawer is empty (meaning all their work is finished) then they may have Book Look or sometimes Dead Time. I have three afternoon times set aside for DEAD Time. Colouring these pictures is optional for my first graders. I just give out one piece of paper a day and once it is used it goes home. We don't save them. If they finish before DEAD Time is over they may book look or sometimes I allow puzzle time on the carpet. DEAD Timr could be 10 minutes or 30 minutes. It just depends on th time we have.

Another idea would be to have puzzle mats with 100 piece or 500 piece puzzles for various groups to work on. After the 10 minutes the puzzles would have to be rolled up until the next puzzle time. I have one puzzle mat that I use as a station twice a week with 100 piece or 500 piece puzzle.

Another time filler could be a novel re-aloud at this time. Often after recess we had teachers read aloud to us for 10-20 minutes. If I remember correctly if we had to complete an assignment we stayed at our desk to do it but others sat at their desk and just listened. In grade 2 I know we heard Charlotte's Web and Ramona the Pest. Some students got copies of the novel and followed along with the teacher, but this was optional.
