Classification Reply

Clip to ScrapBook
I have had great fun wiht my students doing classification. We begin by doing a breakdown of the 5 kingdoms. Then do a Kings Play Chess On Funny Green Squares idea. We then move on to classifying their shoes. We get in a
circle in the middle of the room--push all of the desks aside and each person takes off one shoe. The kids think this is great fun. Then everyone decides how to out them into two categories, then put those into two categories and so. A dichotomous key.
On another day we get a group of buttons and actually make a key with each group. A button is set aside and another group comes over
to key out that button. We make up silly names for them like Bertha Button, Button Your Lip, etc. If the second group can find the correct name for the button then we know that the key was made correctly.
We then key out real reptiles on teh computer.
For assessment, I make a hardware key and they have to find the name of the nut or screw, etc.

THe students learn a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!
