Take the class out on the school bus into the community, or use public transportation (great for secondary students). Work on pedestrian safety, reading survival signs, shopping/money handling, soical skills, leisure skills-- bowling, skating, swimming, going to the movies, etc. Can you get some sort of a budget for this? Your class could go grocery shopping once or twice a month. The grocery store is a great place for a math lesson! Then do some cooking in your room. If you don't have a kitchen, use an electric skillet or "fifth burner."
There is curriculum called "Going Places,"
I believe it is available from Mayer-Johnson.
Make sure you have enough staff before going into the community. Perhaps recruit volunteers to help you.
