Flat Stanley is a book by Jeff Brown and illustrated by Tomi Ungerer. Book jacket says it's for 2nd to 5th graders. It's about a little boy (Stanley Lambchop) who gets flattened by a bulletin board that falls on him. Stanley explores the world as a two-dimensional person (he gets flown as a kite; he gets mailed to visit relatives across the country; etc.). He eventually is returned to three-dimensionality by his brother (who blows him back up with a bicycle pump, as I recall). It's witty and fun. It's a great book for talking about prejudice and the importance of appreciating differences between people, for thinking about the differences between two- and three-dimensional objects, and lots of other great stuff. A Flat Stanley is a paper doll that you roll up and mail across country (or nearby) -- just like the character. It's a good tool for teaching about geography and related things. Here's the Flat Stanley website cite: Have lots of fun! Susan
