struggling readers By Katy

| How low is low? I just finished reading assessments (DRAs) and my lowest reader is at a level H (Fountas and Pinnell) I am going to meet with that group everyday and continue guided reading that focuses on multiple decoding strategies and also meet with them in other groups to focus more on reading comprehension strategies. Rigby has a nice collection of books that students haven't seen before. I bought 18 books at level H for a little under 100$ and they also have books with related word activities for 49$ that I recommend to parents to purchase. I also think it's important to have students who haven't "broken the code" yet do a lot of word work, such as using magnetic letters to make words and playing games such as "Chunks" and "Clusters." The reading strategy that I emphasize at level H is the one where they say the first letter sound/s before the first vowel, skip the rest of the word and read on and try to guess the word by context/meaning. Good luck! ~Katy
