Try using a lattice square. Kids seem to like it because it looks a little more like art than math. Once the kids get the hang of it they can calculate answers quickly and it's fun. This site gives an example: http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/52468.html

Use 4 squares for 2 digit problems. If the 2 numbers you multiply give a single digit answer you place a 0 in the top half of your square.
