Actually, I find most of my Open Court lessons very meaningful. I've taught the program for eight years, and I'm always amazed at the insightful comments that arise from our class discussions. Sometimes even the seemingly mundane can become creative. I have always found vocabulary instruction dry and tedious, but last year, my class reveled in their ability to create bizarre (but correct!) sentences. They would invent characters who appeared in all of their sentences for weeks at a time! As for the authentic literature, there's plenty of it in Open Court. The anthologies are collections of complete picture books (in the younger grades) and excerpts from chapter books (in the older grades).
