Seek help from within the school

My suggestion is you go to your team of 5th grade teachers and express your concerns. More than likely they have taught this grade before and can give you the guidance you need. I'm sure once you get started you will see that there are things that "WOW" 5th graders also, especially if you like being creative and artistic.
As far as setting up your classroom, just do it the way you think will work best and if you find out it doesn't, move those desks around. I'm sure you change your room around several times during the year anyway, right? Don't give up and have fun!
