    I'm afraid I'm not much of a softie when it comes to tears, at least not in response to a reprimand or punishment. I agree with the previous post that you have to be consistent and stick to your decision. I usually tell students that if crying makes them feel better, then by all means go ahead. I also let them know that while I understand they are upset the tears will not change my decision. Kind of like the old "Don't to the crime if you can't do the time" kind of thing. (Of course, I don't use those exact words).
