I just want to comment on Tia's posting. I subbed in summer school with a sixth grade teacher who pretty much told me the same thing about her experience with students that age. Since then I have subbed in sixth grade music and p.e. classes and find I thoroughly enjoy that age, also! I've been invited to spend a day observing a sixth grade class (the summer school teacher's) so we can get to know each other. The teacher feels this is helpful before the first time I sub for them. This way, we can establish rapport ahead of time. Someone else posted on this board about the importance of taking your time in the beginning of a sub assignment to explain the rules to the students and chat with them some about yourself, etc. I've noticed, too, that when I start the day too rushed it makes a difference in the outcome of the day.
