One way of ensuring that the kids notice the plus and minus signs is to have them work all of one kind of problem first. In other words, have them start with all the addition problems on the page. Look at each problem in turn and do it ONLY if it is addition. Then go back and do all the subtraction problems. I also use the highlighting the signs trick. We use a green crayon to mark addition and a red crayon to mark subtraction.
