another idea
By Beth

Clip to ScrapBook
In my 7th grade class, we have started using upside down solo cups in blue and red. The students put the blue cup on top when they are okay, and the red cup on top when they need help.

I have also heard about classes that
have red, yellow and green cups (like a traffic light) with the same idea. Green-okay, Yellow-needs help, not urgent, Red- Stuck needs help.

It actually works very well. No hand raising or "Miss Hager" being yelled across the room. We just started it and it's been working well.

Another thing we do for those "forgotten thoughts" is give each kid post-its to record their ideas that

are unrelated, bugging them, etc. That way they get them out on paper and out of their head and can go back to concentrating on your lesson. I heard about that at a workshop at Columbia University.

Good Luck. The chip idea sounds like a good one too!
