Melissa, When I read your post I thought, "maybe that's why I'm not assigning so much." Last night my son started homework at 5 and we were almost finished at 10:10. Sure there were some breaks but he has learning disabilities| and breaks are part of what we have to do. And, this morning I'll finish up by reading his 4 pages of science to him. It's been like this since the very beginning of his school years. Now he's in 6th grade and this is the best year yet because he can do so much independently. Enough of my soapbox. Back to my original post. I just felt personally attacked when the parent | | said her son wished he were in the other teacher's class because she challenged more. I think the key is balance and as a relatively new teacher I haven't found that balance yet. (Obviously my son's workload is unbalanced for him). I thought that if I heard from other 4th grade teachers I'd get the perspective I need to assign what everyone thinks is useful (in homework practice should make perfect) and approximate 30 minutes of homework.
