My 5th grade class enjoyed writing using the repeating phrase in this book and comparing "when I was little" to "now I do ...". They came up with some really good comparisons and shared them with parents. Don't let them brainstorm too much together because they tend to use the same comparisons. Hope it works well for you. I have also seen Cynthia Rylant's When I was young in the mountains used to spark memories of experiences for students. they copy cat the layout but use their ideas. I love you the purplest is also great to get ideas flowing.
