Keep trying..

Hi,
I just want to let you know that I was in almost the same situation you were last year. I graducated last May, and much to my surprise (and dismay!) I didn't get a job right away like my university led me to believe.
I got married in September of last year, and it is definitely stressful to have a brand new marriage and money issues. I understand completely what you are saying about subbing not being a steady income, but I do agree with the other posters that subbing is the best way to get a job later on. Maybe you could put your name in at a couple of different districts, so if one doesn't call
one day, maybe another one will?? Also, sometimes long term subbing assignments become available, like if someone went on maternity leave or something, and that's basically the next best thing to having your own classroom.

Also, if you dislike the daycare so much, maybe you could sub during the day, and have an easy part time job for the nights or weekends? Maybe you could see if there's a tutoring agency, like Slyvan Learning Centers, but even a non-educational job might provide you with additional income but still allow you the flexiblity to sub during the day.

The last piece of advice I have is to keep on trying to get a real teaching job!! After sending out countless resumes during the summer, I was going to give up and just wait until next year. But a friend of mine told me to keep trying - and I actually got hired in December!!! I know job hunting is time consuming, and basically a pain in the butt, but you're absolutely right - nothing compares to a "real" teaching job.

I hope at least a portion of my ramblings helped you! Good luck, and let us know how it goes....
