Please help your child while you can... By a teacher and parent of a chil

My son(since graduated)struggled all through school(especially junior and senior high)because of ADD. Even though I have been a teacher for a long time, I guess I never wanted to admit that my child had ADD. He was always| quiet and not disruptive in the classroom. I know this because he won awards for his behavior. He even got 100% on a state mandated test and a letter from our governor. Enough said on that, the problems that arose were disorganization of his papers, not turning in his assignments in on time, finding it hard to sit him down to study etc. By the time he got to the secondary schools he had | | such a low self-esteem, I sought help from a counselor. That didn't help either. It wasn't until he graduated and went to college that I had him tested for ADD and on medication. Then he stopped dropping classes and settled down. The medication helps him to be focused on his work. Also, his self esteem has improved so much. It took him quite a while to get where he is now. Also, I will never forget my bickering, tears etc. during his school years. I feel so bad now that I didn't do anything to help him then. Also, I wish that ONE teacher would have suggested that maybe he had ADD and that I should look into it. It would have saved us all years of tears and helped to save his self-esteem. By the way, I tell a few parents this story if they have any concerns about medication. It helps them to come to a positive decision about their child. I hope this helps you and am sorry it is so long.
