I had one of these too!

Clip to ScrapBook
I actually had a student in my class a while ago that acted in TV commercials quite and he frequently missed school for auditions. The poor child was not exactly the brightest either, and struggled as it was, let alone having
to miss school. In addition, they moved constantly (about five times in his six years of schooling) and was therefore never in one place long enough to be tested and placed in special ed. While I agree about forming your own opinions, it is also good to have a heads up about an issue so that you will know already how you will handle it if it should come up again. If the child doesn't
seem to miss school this year, just do what you would normally do. However, before it becomes a problem - I would develop a policy and make sure that all parents are aware of it. Perhaps present this at back to School Night. You could explain that when school is missed, work needs to be made up. Establish guidelins as far as what assignments, how much classwork, and how much homework. For example, if they can demonstrate mastery in only doing one worksheet, only make them make up one worksheet. Set up a system where you keep track of all work given - class and homework. I use my copy of the student agenda so that I can remember long range things for when students are absent for a long stretch of time. Make ALL parents aware of this policy, and be careful to not make exceptions because then you will get "Well, when so and so was absent for her soccer tournament, you didn't make HER make it up" because word will travel. So basically, you know about the problem, develop a policy, and stick to it, that way if it does come up, you already have a way to combat it! Good luck with your little super star. By the way, the student in my class didn't even finish the year with me. he moved.....AGAIN.
