I think as teachers we are having the same problems everywhere. Children have not developed adequate listening skills by the time they enterschool. Listening needs to be a 'taught' skill for many of our children. Families do not share conversations asmuch as they usedto...many children are plunked in front of T.v's and Nintendo machines. For grade one, I think a verbal and auditory hook is important.....a bell/or a chant "chocolate" and the children are taught to stop all and respond ' chocolate'. Then when all the children are listening, then you give the directions....onlyone direction at a time. Model the actionyou want.Hope this helps!
