Maybe this will work? By Lou

I've had classes in the past who have been very talkative also. I also have a super chatty class this year. What's working best (so far) this year is "Give Me 5," and I count from 1 to 5, with the 5 steps posted on the| board (Eyes on speaker, mouths quiet, eyes on speaker, hands and feet still, sit up straight). When this is no longer effective, I will give speeding tickets (for speedy mouths). I have made tickets that say something like "Slow down! Your mouth is out of control!" If I count to 5 and a student or 2 is still talking, I just walk over and set a ticket on his/her desk. I don't say a word, | | the ticket says it all. The student then needs check in with me at recess. I have a CRIME CAN that says "If you do the crime, you have to pay the time." Inside are a variety of consequences. The student with the ticket randomly chooses a consequence and must take care of that before recess can happen. Consequences vary: Dust library bookshelves, challenge teacher to a spelling bee, write all the 9s math facts, find 3 good jokes to share with class, etc.It takes discipline on my part to hand out tickets rather than continue to remind students to be quiet, but it's much more effective. Maybe this would be a possibility for you?
