Building Blocks
By K

Clip to ScrapBook
I use a language arts program called building blocks and I have a lot of success with it. You'll be able to find a very easy to follow resource book in a teacher store. Basically, it explains 3 different components of reading
- reading to children, reading with children, and children reading on their own. It sounds like you are doing a lot of reading to children which is great. They need that so much! It's also important to read with children which is shared reading. You can use big books or chart poems, songs . . . whatever you can think of. The important thing is that everyone can see the print
so that they can learn important print concepts (tracking print, the difference between letters/words/sentences, punctuation marks, upper/lowercase . . .) They will also begin to make connections between the words and sounds they hear and the letters they see. You can type "shared reading" into a search engine and I'm sure that you'll get lots of great ideas. Let me know if there's anything more specific that you need or want to know.
