...break down the rubrics to the different components of the writing process. I had my 4th graders start out with a graphic organizer for points based upon a simple rubric. When they were ready for me to check their rough draft, we used a different rubric. They would then try for the final draft (another rubric), if no changes needed to be made.

All together, I usually expected 3 pieces of paper stapled together (based on the writing process).

All along, they would know how many points they were shooting for in the end, as well as how many points they were working towards for each part. That way, there were no surprises....
