I teach a grade 2/3 class on a reserve and am using collections as well, along with other things. The grade 2's should well not be in grade 2. They are about at a middle grade 1 level. The grade 2 collections is way to hard for them, as is most of the grade 1 collections. I know this is not helping you but I know how you feel. We read the collections together for interest sake and I include other books and readers with more basic sight words so that the students can experience some success at reading, besides being frustrated with the readers.
