Open Up Communication
By Allison

Clip to ScrapBook
I did something with my parents this year that made us all comfortable right from the beginning. Call up each of your parents individually (it might take a while, but it's worth it!) and tell them that you are just calling
to say hi, and see how "Joe" is feeling about his first week (or month) of school. This shows the parents that you care about their child, and it is also showing them that you are a friendly person. I've found that this helps if later in the year you need to talk to them about a problem that their child might be having. They will be more receptive! Also, by doing this, you are taking control
of any situation in your classroom. Remember, even though this is your first year, YOU are the expert when it comes to your class! Be confident in knowing that! Good luck!
