Whiel I can understand your confusion, I do not think it would be right to make JW families think they need to attend separate schools! It is so important for children to find outt hat everyone else is not just like them!| With the kids in my class, I started from the very first day by saying "If you say the pledge, please stand. If you do not, please stay seated quietly." This is a 1/2 class. I have not had a problem. Also, during a birthday, I gave them an "alternative" snack...but they did not sing happy birthday. When kids ask, I talked about how in different religions people believe and | | celebrate different things. It is not "wierd" to them...it is just another form of religion. If the parents did not ask for her to leave the room during birthdays, I would see if the girl could stay in there and do something fun...maybe do something on the computer. She should not be EXCLUDED from the fun...just the "birthday" part of it...so, when they are eating their snack, she could eat a separate snack, but still be participating in class talk and laughter, etc. I would also do a little mini unit on different cultures...I once taught in a mostly Muslim school, and we celebrated and talked about Christmas, Eid and everything in between.
