Losing all 3 stars in the morning By Deni

Sue, I have never had this happen. But I have had one class lose all three by the end of the school day. This class had 28 first graders, several with special needs, including severe behavioral problems. And no aide. If| I was teaching a class that had lost two stars in the morning, I think I would take a break, sit down with them and talk about what was happening to their extra recess time. Ask them if they still wanted that free time at the end of the day, and what different choices they needed to make to see that happen. I have found the students know what is happening, and who is causing disruption. | | Peer pressure can really help make this Shooting for the Stars method work! They ALL want fifteen minutes of extra recess, so they try to help each other stay on track. I love it!I want to point out here that sometimes I have had to implement the teacher's classroom discipline method in combination with the Shooting for the Stars for specific students who were so disruptive that I didn't want to punish the entire class by erasing a star. I have no trouble doing this, and I try to point this out during the first morning discussion about the day and what they need to do to keep their three stars. I hope this helps! Best of luck to you in your substitute teaching adventures, Sue! Deni, rural Ohio sub
