I teach in Virginia, and one thing I did was stop at a state visitor center. They had all sorts of brochures, free maps, kids' activities. Since Virginia was part of the Civil War, I also picked up free Civil War newspapers. The kids loved all of the brochures, and they created their own state brochures from the materials I gathered.
