It sounds like you are on the right track toward being a teacher. I wouldn't worry about the math too much, especially since you want to teach the lower grades.

As for working with children, you might call your local elementary school and see if they have a need for volunteers (most do). Explain your situation to them and see if you might be able to come in 1-2 hours a week. This is a great way for you to make contacts in your district, too. Another thing that you might do is open yourself up to tutoring elementary students or storytelling at the local library on the weekends or after school.
